What is an EV Charging Station?

An EV charging station is where you go to charge an Electric Vehicle. In practice, it’s a bit like a gas pump crossed with a phone charging dock. You park, plug it in, and let it go. If you want to check one out, look up “EV travel stop near me” and you’re sure to find something within driving distance. Home chargers can be plugged into a wall, whereas the EV chargers you see at these charging stations will be hardwired to the grid. You can spot electric car charging stations by the rows of parking spaces accompanied by gas pump-like chargers.

What Types of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations are Available Along I-95?

The EV charging stations currently available along I-95 have generally everyone covered, with EV charging station companies seemingly deploying more stations each day. In addition to numerous private and public charging stations, Tesla had 22 Supercharger stations deployed by 2021, and Nissan and EVgo had nine stations deployed along the interstate.

The infrastructure for electric car charging stations as it is now should allow anyone who drives an EV to make the trip from NYC to Miami without fear of running out of power. But, given several accessibility issues and the various types of chargers and EVs out there, you’ll still want to map your trip out based on where you can find compatible electric car charging stations. In other words, Google “charging stations near you” before you head out. There are a lot of EV charging points along the way, but they’re not all compatible.

CALSTART, a clean transportation non-profit, is currently working with National Grid to turn I-95 into a “zero-emissions freight corridor” over the next two decades, necessitating dozens of new electric truck charging stations. We’re going to be seeing a lot more high-tech truck stops on I-95 pretty soon.

With all the new charging stations along I-95, you could say it’s all set to be the new Route 66 as the EV infrastructure expands and sticker prices come down, bringing more business to towns and cities up and down the East Coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Looking for fast answers? Check here and let us know if we’ve got you covered:

How much do EV charging stations cost?

Short answer: Some EV charging points are, and some are not. Most of the charging stations you’ll find along I-95 will require a credit card, while free charging is usually found at private businesses like hotels and restaurants and may or may not be for customers only. Your best bet when heading out is to budget for the cost of the EV charging stations, and maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised by some free electric charging stations along the way. Our charging stations are maintained by Tesla which sets and maintains its own charging fees.

How long does it take to charge an EV at the charging station?

Fast-charging stations can charge a car from empty in under an hour, but only if your EV is compatible with fast-charging stations. At a public charging station, a full charge will typically take at least 4 hours, so if you’re driving last year’s model, charge up at home and top off on the road.

Are there fast-charging stations at regular intervals along the I-95 route?

At present, you can expect to find fast electric charging stations on I-95 every 100 to 150 miles. With a typical EV going 250 to 300 miles on a full battery, this should provide Tesla drivers with plenty of juice to go the distance. No matter what you drive, it shouldn’t be hard to find compatible charging stations near you.

Are the charging stations on I-95 equipped with multiple charging plugs to accommodate different types of EVs?

Tesla fast-charging stations are only compatible with Teslas, but there are adapters available that allow EV users to use these chargers. If you are setting out on a trip, it would be worthwhile to research Tesla adapters and prepare ahead of time.

Gas was fairly priced, though I had to go inside for my receipt as the pump wouldn't produce one. Additionally, the men's bathroom was in dire need of attention. Will be choosing somewhere else to stop on my next road trip.

This is a pretty good gas station. They have showers and restrooms. They have Subway and Dunkin Donuts. They also sale your standard frozen food that you can have microwaved. They sale beer but not between the hours of 1145pm to 6am. Overall, the stuff is nice and friendly. They have a small dog park but it is a safe place for your pets to stretch out their legs.
